Key Features
Android v2.2 (Froyo) OS
4-inch LCD Touchscreen
5 MP Primary Camera
2 MP Secondary Camera
1 GHz Cortex-A8 Processor
HD Recording
Expandable Storage Capacity of 32 GB
The LG Optimus Black is a smartphone running Android 2.2 Froyo OS with a WVGA display. The Optimus Black P970 is powered by a 1 GHz Cortex-A8 processor with a PowerVR SGX530 GPU for handling graphic intensive apps.

The LG Optimus Black features a Nova IPS Display which LG claims it to be the best ever display they have fitted on a smartphone. The screen packs the same 800 x 480 pixels as that on the LG Optimus 2X, albeit with enhanced brightness, richer contrast ratios and improved sunlight legibility. The 5 megapixel camera on the Optimus P970 is complimented by a LED flash and can record 720p HD video. There is a front facing 2 megapixel camera for video calls.

The phone features LG's Optimus 2.0 UI and brings new features like missed calls or new message alerts on your lockscreen. The intelligent lockscreen also takes you to the relevant section as soon as you unlock the screen. Apart from that, the LG Black packs the usual Froyo 2.2 goodies like flash supported browser, Wi-Fi tethering support and wireless control from the notification bar.

Design
The Optimus Black wears a sleek, minimalistic chassis and conveys a sense of understated sophistication with its continuous lines. Weighing a frugal 109 g and measuring 9.2 mm in thickness, the Optimus Black is one of the slimmest and most portable mid-high end Android phones in the market. The phone comes with a accelerometer for auto UI orientation, a proximity sensor for auto turn-off and a ambient light sensor for auto brightness adjust.

LG has introduced a G button in the Optimus Black P970, once pressed, it allows you to control the phone with various preset motion gestures. The button utilizes the handset's accelerometer to understand the gestures and allows various functions like panning around a web page, changing homescreens or accepting calls without unlocking the screen.

Battery and Storage
LG has slimmed down the 1500 mAh battery to fit it into the thin chassis of the Optimus Black. The Lithium Ion cell gives 16 hrs of talk time and 455 hrs of standby. The P970 comes with 1 GB of internal memory and supports up to 32 GB microSD cards.

Connectivity and Features
The Optimus Black can connect to the Internet via 3G, Wi-Fi and GPRS networks. The phone is preloaded with Android Webkit browser with pinch-to-zoom and kinetic scrolling support. LG has preloaded the Optimus Black with custom versions of Facebook and Twitter apps, with contact integration and sharing support. The SmartShare app detects songs/videos in your computer and offers to play it on your TV via DLNA connectivity. The media player on the Optimus Black supports Dolby Mobile effect which gives a discernible acoustic improvement when you connect your headphones.

The Wi-Fi Direct feature on the LG Optimus Black P970 facilitates quick and easy wireless transfers between compatible devices. The best part about the technology is that it does not require a wireless access point (Router) and works similar to Bluetooth transfers. The Optimus Black features A-GPS connectivity with Digital Compass and syncs with Google Maps. Other features in the P970 include Document Viewer, Push Mail support, Voice commands and Organizer.

But while those phones hit the headlines, the real money's to be had from good quality midrange phones, like the Optimus Black, which makes do with a single-core processor and 2D screen, but still manages to pack a good range of features into its stylishly slim body. And that slim body is pretty too, measuring a svelte 9.2mm thick and clad in, er, black, unsurprisingly, from top to toe. The entire front is covered by a smooth sheet of glass with the usual four Android buttons lining up beneath the screen on a touch sensitive strip. There's a power/sleep button with microUSB port and 3.5mm headphone jack on top and a volume rocker and gesture control button on the side. This latter of the above allows you to make use of the phone's motion sensor for a variety of commands. You can flip between your seven home screens by tipping the phone left or right, for instance, scroll up or down a web page in the same way and if you press it while you're viewing a picture, it will automatically zoom in, and you can navigate your way around by tilting. It's not necessarily better than moving around the screen with your fingers, but it's a neat trick all the same. The screen itself is impressively bright, which LG puts down to its new NOVA technology. It has a fairly high 480x800-pixel resolution but looks even better than you'd expect, all but leaping out to bludgeon your eyes with its sharpness and brightness. It looks pretty good in sunlight too, with startlingly vivid colours shining through. Pictures and films both take on a striking vibrancy when viewing them on this screen and it can be a bit difficult to adjust to anything less afterwards. Which is great, but as ever with LG, it seems, the screen is a little lacking in sensitivity and needed additional presses just a bit too often for comfort. Android 2.2 Froyo is the operating system of choice, which isn't quite the latest version (2.3 Gingerbread is, at the time of writing), so you'll be missing SIP calling, NFC (Near Field Communication) and video calling, at least until the inevitable update. The processor is only single core but it's a 1GHz model backed by 512MB of RAM. In practise it was fairly nippy when opening apps, browsing the web and viewing video. LG's S-Class interface puts its own spin on the Android icons and includes a few extra widgets, including Social Feed, which pulls together all your social networking updates. There's also a connection to LG World -- an app site that only allows you to download content once you've earned enough activity points from rating, reviewing and sharing other LG World apps. That's instead of, y'know, buying them. It's an odd concept, but we'll need to wait and see if it catches on (we won't be holding our breath though). The 5-megapixel camera isn't as advanced as the 8-megapixel version on the Optimus 2X but it's a decent performer nonetheless, with autofocus, LED flash, digital zoom, manual focusing and a variety of modes including multi-shot, macro and panorama. Quality tends to be good too with sharp edges, strong detail and vibrant colours. There's also a 2-megapixel camera on the front which you can use for video chat (once the Android 2.3 update arrives, that is -- until then you can use it as a mirror). There's 2GB of memory on board that you can bump up to 32GB via microSD card and the battery didn't seem to suffer too much from the demands of the unusually bright screen, delivering a good day of fairly heavy use.
